This study examines individuals’ decision-making process in major choice by analyzing how gendered self-concepts and perceptions of required competences create gender differences in preferences for specific field of study characteristics. By combining survey data with field of study descriptions from an official Swiss career counseling website, we use text analysis, panel data analysis and decomposition methods to assess 1) whether required competences differ by gender composition of a major, 2) whether female and male high school students differ in their preferences for required competences and 3) which individual-level variables can explain these preferences. Our results show A) that preferences for required competences in field of study plans vary substantially by gender, B) that these differences are mainly driven by endowment differences in mathematical and technical self-concepts and C) that women’s preference for female-typed competences is a consequence of their negative mathematical and technical self-concepts.
