Forschungskolloquium PHSG: «Fostering learner autonomy through autonomous teachers: an in-service teacher development program»

Gastreferat von Dr. Esen Genç, Ondokuz Mayıs (University, Turkey).

The evolving landscape of education, with its increasing focus on learner-centered approaches, necessitates a shift in traditional teaching roles and methodologies. This shift requires in-service teachers to develop new skills for teaching in their classes. Grounded in constructivist theories, the current research highlights the importance of autonomous teachers as a precursor to promoting learner autonomy. It proposes a tailored twelve-week in-service teacher development program (TDP) designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to cultivate autonomous learners. The program was practiced last year in Turkey. The participants of the study were 10 English language teachers who teach at the secondary school. The program began with an orientation session aimed at familiarizing participants with the concept of autonomy and setting the stage for the learning journey ahead. In the initial weeks, the focus was on establishing a strong theoretical foundation. Midway through the program, the emphasis shifted towards practical application. Teachers were introduced to action research as a tool for solving classroom challenges and promoting autonomy. They were encouraged to design and implement small-scale action research projects tailored to their specific classroom contexts. The latter half of the program was dedicated to hands-on activities and strategies aimed at creating an autonomous learning environment. Participants explored ways to integrate learner-centered course planning, incorporate authentic materials, and utilize reflective practices such as self-evaluation and learner diaries. The TDP aimed at blending theory with practice, equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to foster a more autonomous and engaged learning environment for their students.
