«English as a foreign language at tertiary level: Case studies on students’ language attitudes and student-teacher e-mail interaction»
Donnerstag, 20. April 2023, 16.00 - 17.30 Uhr
For young people today, English is no longer a foreign language in the traditional sense, but rather an additional language with which they come into contact while still learning their first language, and one they interact with daily, especially if they choose to study English at the university level. The first talk by Monika Kavalir will report the results of an extensive online survey among students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. This is part of a developing project to investigate when and to what extent young people use English and what their attitudes towards English and their L1(s) are. The second paper by Vesna Lazović will provide an overview of rhetorical strategies found in university students’ e-mails when writing to faculty members in English. The analysis is based on a self-compiled corpus of 200 e-mails sent by English major students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana during one academic year. The paper examines the language and politeness strategies, as well as the overall tone of the messages and the extent to which students are able to employ a variety of rhetorical strategies in English to interact successfully in academic contexts.
