Fachdidaktik Naturwissenschaften PHSG

Institute for Science Teacher Education

We research innovative approaches to acquiring basis scientific knowledge. Here, we focus primarily on the areas of thinking and acting within the subjects of mathematics, IT, science and technology across all levels of compulsory school education and at secondary school level II.

On an accompanying basis, we also conduct empirical and humanities-focused research projects that examine the scientific and technological literacy of teachers and pupils.

Focal areas and research fields

The institute’s mission is to conduct practice-based, qualitative and quantitative research with a high didactic value. It then seeks to use the insights gained to develop pedagogic products such as teaching materials for primary and secondary school levels, and extra-curricular offers such as the mobiLLab. Such insights also form the basis for the consulting services and expert reports that the institute provides to schools, municipalities and companies.

The institute’s activities are divided into the following three research and development areas:
1.    Mathematics, IT, science, technology (known in German as the MINT subjects)
2.    Environmental education
3.    Scientific culture and communication
